I had a rivet counting moment the other day.

Serial Numbers currently in the collection:

Mk1's (AEH.HYD.***)

2, 72, 315, 564, 890, 1030, 1040, 1049, 148 FC, 275 FC

Earliest date: 1959
Latest date: Appears to be 1968 but not entirely convinced at the moment due to discrepancy in the pump number (could have been replaced) as 1030 & 1040 are dated 1965

Mk2's (introduced circa 1967 / 1968)

604, 812, 1005, 1007, 1064, 1092, 1169, 1362, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, PFL/103

It appears sometime between 1971 & 1974 they stopped stamping serial numbers on them. PFL/103 is the youngest in the collection dated 1980. Earliest date appears to be 604 (1968)

I'd like to know if anyone has a sub 600 number on their mk2. I have a theory the mk2's didn't start at 0. Also if anyone has a mk1 with any markings that would give it away as preproduction or higher than 1049. Although I'm not sure what the markings would be like for a pre pro winch?

Hi, i have a MK1 winch & I see the numbers under the pump but can't see any numbers on the winch at all.... where should I be looking ?

Hi, the mk 1 winches usually have the serial number stamped around or on the 'Land Rover' badge. Sometimes, if they have been exposed to the elements they can be quite hard to see. Regards Rob

If my theory and research is correct the serial number of yours should be between 315 & 890, as long as its the original pump. The only exception would be if its a Forward Control winch, which appear to have a separate numbering system.

Thanks for your replies, i couldn't see a number on the winch &; didn't want to start scraping paint off as I may be fitting it & like the look of it with layers of paint ETC. I checked the PTO pump & I think it shows that it's likely all parts are the original set here's a picture of the PTO pump.

And correct you are, I had given up then just now while doing a different job the sun caught it & I could see a number, it's out of the way on the inside face so I scraped the paint & it's 506.
