True, easier with the defender wiring loom etc though, but with a rotton D2 from £500, it's worth a punt.

Any other details, what springs etc? I assume he used a 4.236 adapter plate onto a V8 box?

I'm currently pondering the idea of a Td5 in a 101, and having looked under the bonnet of a Defender powered by one last week I think it's actually a reasonably practical proposition, and in reality no worse than an efi V8, of which I've done several conversions in 101's, 110's, and a IIB.

How hard can it be?

I'll try and get you some photos.

You're right, he used a V8 box and 4.236 adapter plate.

Heavy duty Old Man Emu 110 rear springs all round, they give it a nice lift, about 3 or 4 inches.

:o
F.A.B. has been "non upright" twice now... anything higher and I'd need training wheels sticking out - and that's without any cargo aboard

It always amused me that when I bought my 101 people told me I'd tip it over.

A few power slides on the road (unintentional) and several trials events later (apparently some looked pretty precarious) it never made it further than about 20 degrees past upright, and that was on a steep descent.

Maybe it's just more stable?

Certainly a 'neat' fit in terms of space available. Truck itself looks an absolute monster but looks absolutely bang on.

I'd love to have a proper poke round it.
I thought the phaser had the turno mounted at the back of the head, is this an unusual varient? How's the gearbox holding up? Is the sump the original or modified? Can't quite tell from the pictures.

Still, big six cylinder, 9.00x16's, looks as close to a modern day 'One Ton' as we're ever likely to see.
Thourghly impressed.

How about a 3.2 litre 5-cyl Tdci in a 110 on 900x16s?

Thanks, he's put some serious time and effort into getting this how he wanted, he'll be pleased to hear that :DD

I think you're thinking of the 4 cylinder phaser used in the Dodge 50 series and RB44's, I'm pretty sure they had the turbo mounted at the back of the head. This one is came out of a Seddon Atkinson that we used to run a few years ago.

The sump is not the original one to the engine, it came from a AWD Bedford and has not been modified in any way. The oil filter housing is from the Bedford too. The Bedford sump was about the most suitable for the conversion as it has the well at the back, the Seddon Atkinson sump had the well at the front and was totally unsuitable without major modification.

The gearbox seems to be holding up fine, he's just stripped it down and fitted new bearings to it as it was getting quite noisy. Don't think that's due to it being on the Perkins though, it was a cheap, unknown box off ebay and has been noisy since it was fitted.

Let me know if you're ever heading down to Stoke on Trent, you're welcome to come have a look.

It's just something that was lieing around... It gets better!!!

I love the 'try it and see' mentality, very interesting to hear how well the box seems to be working with it too.
You're probably right about the turbo, I don't know much about phasers. Only ever seen a 4 pot one.

Might have to find an excuse to pass by stoke, only a couple hundred miles south...

Here's well known Youtube footage of a hi-cap with a Cummins 6BT. I have to confess that it sounds pretty cool.
