I thought it might be fun to have a thread on all the different types of winches we have fitted to our vehicles.

Here are mine -

First off the MKII Hydraulic fitted to my IIA 1-Ton.



And the Fairey capstan on the 88"

A MAP capstan I fitted yesterday

Series 2a 109 SW 6cyl. Not bad is it!

and the Fairey I rebuilt in September. That went to a chap with a Series 3 88

No, a Land Rover specialist is rebuilding it. The owner of the vehicle asked me to supply and fit the winch. It is going to be a stunning vehicle when it's finished though. I wish it was mine!

Hi, nice build. A question if I may?

I have a 6 cylinder LWB Dormobnile. Having successfully fitted a Capstan winch to my 88, and Turner to my other 109 2.25 diesel with no alignment challenges, the 6 cylinder crank is too high buy approx 30mm for the Turner drive shaft to connect to the winch drive - same as on Capstan. Did you need to lower your engine or change the chassis hole size for the winch drive shaft to fit?

The six cylinder does seem to sit slightly nose-up. As some were known to have capstan winches fiitted it seems they work okay?

A Fairey / Mayflower capstan winch is designed to fit both 2.25 & 2.6 engines. The design of the driveshaft on the Fairey allows a lot of scope for adjustment.

The Aeroparts Capstan was only really designed for the 2l petrol and 2.25 engines. The design of that driveshaft system is much more rigid and very little adjustment can be made. You may find that a very late Aeroparts with the simplified drive system similar to a Fairey may be your best chance. I once removed an Aeroparts Capstan from a 6 cyl. The brackets had been horribly bodged and the driveshaft extended slightly.

If you want to fit a capstan to a 6, go for a Fairey.
