Ullo all!
I hope i'm right in saying dan's SEB has wingtops made of nice old checker plate stuff.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a source for it, or even some already cut to size hiding in a garage?
My 110 is getting alot of use as a photo platform and it's beginning to effect the passengers wing. I'm absolutely loathe to add modern stuff, and i'd prefer to replace the wing top, than drill holes and rivet...!
Anyone got an idea?
Thanks
Matt
SEB's Checkerplate
Re: SEB's Checkerplate
The SEB did fit what we might call cricket weave plating to the wing tops, I was told that a company called Aalco could supply it but I never established that as being correct. To be fair the modern stuff wouldn't look too horrific on a 110 but really looks weird on a series, it just wasn't seen. Oddly that kind of pattern did exist at the time, but usually as steel decking plate for such as breakdown trucks, perhaps even steps and ship decking, but would be a bit thicker than that fitted to wing tops today.

Thanks,
I'll look up Aalco later.
I can't stand the normal checkerplate fitted to modern stuff... I just can't!
The AA Eezion (which i've still not had any contact about) had the steel stuff with the "modern" pattern fitted as it's pickup deck, but the owner was struggling to find replacement for it in steel! seems it's generally only available in alu now.
Re: SEB's Checkerplate
Any chance of a shot of one of SEB's wings Dan? So I can compare!
Cheers!

Re: SEB's Checkerplate
My 110 has 3mm ally plate on the wings, doesn't look all that bad for it.
I considered taking it off, but decided lots of holes would look worse.

Re: SEB's Checkerplate
I recall a certain 1-Ton which would have had plates like mine has, they were removed and the wing tops coated in filler - you could feel underneath where the filler had formed little stalactites on the inside of the wing...

Re: SEB's Checkerplate
Yeah, not really keen on drilling holes... My plan is...
Either reform the whole wing top in classic plate, and bolt in, or, replace the wing top with a scruffy one i've got, and rivet to that, again covering the whole wing A la SEB style..!

Re: SEB's Checkerplate
Just a thought, I've got a 200 110 at the moment that I love because it isn't covered in chequer plate etc. But I know how handy the stuff is and my wings are a little marked. My plan is get a set of wing tops sprayed body colour for it.
The other place to look for material like on Dans is a good old commercial scrap yard. I've seen it seen it used in/ on old trucks of similar age to Seb
