Likely a question for Dan: Sixer mpg

With a large helping of incredulity I read young Dan's post on the 'other' forum with talk of the sixer's fuel-consumption - er... 10mpg! With a Prima being the exception, I've owned and used as daily-drivers all the others. Don't 'spose it'll happen yet it's always been a dream of mine to run a Westlake sixer.
Dan, you wrote to other's complaints of 17mpg that you'd be over the moon to see 17mpg. Jeez, is that because of the gearing, or is that 'just how it is'? What mpg can we expect on a good day? These days by virtue of rarity I regard a sixer as a bit exotic. Back in the day, how much better was a 109 SW?
